From Darwin to contemporary physics, science has dramatically expanded our knowledge of the mechanisms operating within nature. At the same time, this expansion has revealed layers of mathematical order, physical regularity, parameter dependence and cosmic structure that raise questions extending beyond the mechanisms themselves.

Science can increasingly describe how the universe behaves; whether the existence and intelligibility of that lawful order have a deeper metaphysical explanation remains an open philosophical question.

Theism represents one such explanation: that the universe and its orderly laws exist because they were intentionally created and sustained by God.

And the earth was a formless and desolate emptiness – Genesis 1:2

I think that when most readers ponder this sentence, they picture God looking out over a vast dark expanse of space. Even science when describing the “Big Bang Theory” place a singularity into a vast universe of darkness.

The scripture; however, says that in the beginning there was “nothing,” No universe, no “Space-Time Matter.” No anything. This is a hard concept to comprehend. Nothing as opposed to an empty room

The words used are:
8414. tohu – meaning
a worthless thing, formlessness, emptiness
meaningless, unreality.
922. bohu – describes an uninhabitable emptiness—an evacuated state devoid of structure, order, or life.

The words imply a space not yet ordered for habitation vs a place that has alteady been prepared for habitation.

Modern physics has repeatedly forced us to abandon the intuition that
“empty space = nothing.” But, in this description, the emptiness was nothing.

The fact that He can create something out of nothing is one of His greatest attributes which makes Him God. It also places God outside of creation. If God existed within the universe – then He by default would be bound by the limits of the universe. He could not be omnipotent.

Scripture supports this:
“what is seen was not made out of what was visible.” Hebrews 11:3

The point is that the visible order did not originate from some previously visible material.

“who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.” Romans 4:17

Again, this strongly suggests God’s ability to bring something into existence that previously did not exist.
