Why does anything exist ... why not nothing?

He is the image of the invisible God , the firstborn of all creation: for by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, or dominions, or rulers, or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is also the head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him. - Colossians 1:15

The message of God begins with the explanation of creation. God has always existed – without time or beginning in the past and without time or ending in the future. He exists outside of creation and the universe. God does not depend on creation for His existence – but creation does depend on Him. Genesis tells us that the universe and all that is within was brought forth from nothing – not an empty room – but from nothing – except His will. Scripture also tells us that there is only one GOD. There is no other. The combination of God being one and His Will being omnipotent is the core of Genesis and the Holy Scriptures. The entire Bible is commentary on these principles.

Genesis 1
The Creation of the World: God creates the heavens, earth, light, sky, land, plants, animals, and humanity over six days, resting on the seventh.

Genesis 2
Adam and Eve: A more detailed account of humanity’s creation. Adam is placed in Eden, Eve is created, and the two live in innocence together.

Genesis 3
The Fall: The serpent tempts Eve, and Adam and Eve eat from the forbidden tree. Sin enters human experience, and they are expelled from Eden.

The key element in this passage is Adam choosing to follow his own will, rather than following God’s will. This same intent was expressed by Lucifer – who wanted to be “Like God” and by contemporary man when they say “I have a right to do what I want.”

Genesis 4
Cain and Abel: Adam and Eve’s sons Cain and Abel offer sacrifices to God. Cain kills Abel.

When Cain becomes angry, God warns him that his desire is trying to master him – but he needs to rule over it. This is echoed in the book of James where we see the progression from desire to sin. It begins with the knowledge of evil intent, fueled by the temptation to ignore Gods will, determined to express your own will and then acting upon the unholy desire.

Genesis 5

Genesis 6
The World Before the Flood: Humanity becomes increasingly violent and corrupt. God decides to judge the world but chooses Noah, who is described as righteous, to survive the coming Flood.

The sons of God (angels) allowed their desires to rule over them and broke Gods Law and took for themselves wives from the sons of men. They placed their own will above God and chose what they wanted rather than obedience to God’s will. – 4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and afterward as well—when the sons of God had relations with the daughters of men. And they bore them children who became the mighty men of old, men of renown. Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great upon the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was altogether evil all the time. And the LORD regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the LORD said, “I will blot out man, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—every man and beast and crawling creature and bird of the air—for I am grieved that I have made them.”

Genesis 7
The Flood: Noah, his family, and the animals enter the ark. The Flood covers the earth, destroying life outside the ark.

If we’re trying to map the biblical idea of “kind” (min in Hebrew) onto modern taxonomy, Family is probably a better rough comparison than Order, but neither is an exact equivalent. “1 kind = a foundational biological lineage. The animals roughly fall into the following divisions – ”Mammals ~400–600, Birds ~300–500, Reptiles ~200–300, Amphibians ~60–100, Terrestrial invertebrates ~200–600, Total ~1,160–2,100.” Genesis gives the Ark’s dimensions as: 300 cubits × 50 cubits × 30 cubits
Using a common estimate of ~18 inches per cubit:
450 ft × 75 ft × 45 ft
That’s roughly 1.5 million cubic feet of internal volume.
So if you’re imagining ~1,500–3,000 animals, the animal count itself isn’t the absurd logistical bottleneck people sometimes assume.

Genesis 8
The Waters Recede: The Flood gradually subsides. Noah leaves the ark, builds an altar, and offers a sacrifice to God.

Genesis 9
“Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you will fall on every living creature on the earth, every bird of the air, every creature that crawls on the ground, and all the fish of the sea. They are delivered into your hand. Everything that lives and moves will be food for you; just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you all things.”
“And surely I will require the life of any man or beast by whose hand your lifeblood is shed. I will demand an accounting from anyone who takes the life of his fellow man.”
